If you didn’t tune into last night’s TUF 27 Finale, you may have missed the news that Kelvin Gastelum, and not Chris Weidman, is going to scrap Robert Whittaker next.
During the broadcast, it was announced with Gastelum on hand, that the former TUF winner will coach opposite of Whittaker for the 28th season of “The Ultimate Fighter.” In addition, Gastelum will face the middleweight champ later this year. The date of the fight has not been determined yet.
While making the announcement, Gastelum said this (quote via MMA Junkie):
“This is crazy. This is what we’ve been working for for a long time, and I’m not going to let it slip by. This is a huge opportunity for me, my first title shot. My first belt of many. And I think it’s going to be a great season. Me and Robert have a lot to offer this sport.”
This new likely surprised some, as just recently Whittaker’s manager reported they were interested in fighting Weidman at the UFC’s next New York City card in November.
