There’s been no shortage of talk lately about when Conor McGregor will fight again, and there’s been reports that talks for his return have begun. But, according to UFC President Dana White, the promotion has not begun negotiating with MMA’s biggest star…
Ever since UFC 223 in April, and McGregor’s now infamous actions at the card’s media day, there’s been a ton of buzz about him fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov later this year. When McGregor does step into the Octagon again, it will mark the first time he’s done so, since 2016. Recently his headcoach John Kavanagh relayed that discussions are ongoing to facilitate the star’s next bout, and Nurmagomedov also said that talks had begun for the fight, before claiming McGregor “fell silent”.
But, at the post-fight press conference for UFC 226, White reported the following about McGregor (quotes via MMA Junkie):
“I’m not even thinking about Conor until – I’m serious,” White said while referring to McGregor’s upcoming, July 26th court date in New York. “I know they’re saying there are talks, but we’re not talking about a fight right now. Conor has to get through July. Whatever’s going to happen to him in July, we’ll figure that out. I don’t know what’s going to happen.
“Is he going to get fined? Is he going to be on probation? Is he going to get this, that? When that’s over with, then we’ll start talking about him fighting.”
McGregor is facing three counts of assault and one count of criminal mischief, as a result of what transpired at the media day for UFC 223. But it’s been reported that McGregor’s legal team is working on a plea deal, and the consensus seems to be that his fighting career won’t be held up, but you never know.
So, it’s not surprising really that White’s not talking about dates, and possible venues for McGregor’s next bout. As, that could lead to a lot of disappointed fans, if say he publicly said they’re looking at November, NYC for Khabib – Conor, and the latter’s sidelined further. Chances are we’ll here more on this front by month’s end.
