In the later years of Georges St-Pierre’s career, it’s safe to say his relationship with Dana White didn’t always appear to be solid. But, after the legend announced he’s officially retiring, St-Pierre said everything is great between him and the UFC President.

In recent years, things between GSP and White certainly appeared to be tense. Even though St-Pierre talked about his desire to fight again, White repeatedly questioned the Canadian’s motivation and willingness to compete. The sides were also at odds, at times, regarding who St-Pierre should fight. Case in point, in more recent months, White shot down the idea of a fight between GSP and Khabib Nurmagomedov, even though both fighters called for it.

But, despite all that, after St-Pierre announced he’s walking away from the game yesterday, the former welterweight and middleweight champ had this to say about White (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“He said, ‘Congratulations,’” St-Pierre reported. “He said, ‘Nobody retires on time in this game, and you did. I’m very happy for you.’ We left on very good terms. We remain friends, so it’s a good thing.”

“I would go and fight one fight at a time, but it’s a little bit selfish on my part, because this business, it’s about what’s next, not what was and what’s happening now,” the 37-year-old star said, while discussing the UFC’s unwillingness to have him fight for the lightweight title at this juncture of his career. “That’s all that makes money.”

There you have it. Now, it should also be noted that White repeatedly praised St-Pierre over the years, so, the fact they’re on good terms as the legend retires, shouldn’t come as too big of a surprise. After all, St-Pierre was one of the biggest names and draws in MMA for years. Further, he was, and is, one of the greatest ambassadors the sport has ever seen.
