UFC 136 Play-by-Play


Round 1 – Guillard comes out firing and connects with a kick to the body. Lauzon stuns Guillard with a counter and immediately takes his back. Lauzon sets his hooks and grabs the rear naked choke. Round 1 – Garcia and Phan take the center of the Octagon and Phan opens up with high kicks while Garcia answers back. Garcia mixing it up with jabs and leg kicks early. Phan lands with jabs of his own, punches the body, then connects with another counter against the fence. Phan drops Garcia and jumps into his guard on the ground. There’s little action and they’re quickly restarted. Phan tags Garcia several times as he gets the better of frequent exchanges. Garcia lands a solid kick to the head. Garcia continues to attack with a mix, then Phan answers with a chargin combo that pokes Garcia in the eye. They restart quickly and Phan ends up on top and ends the round with ground and pound. scores the first for Phan 10-9.

Round 2 – Garcia more active than Phan as we start the second, but he seems to be tiring. Phan answers with punches to the body. Garcia getting sloppy and Phan takes advantage with punches. Garcia winces from a body shot. Garcia connecting a lot less and Phan uses the body to set up hooks and overhands. Phan lands an extended combo the opens up a cut under Garcia’s eye. Another solid combination by Phan as the round ends. MMAFrenzy scores the round for Phan 10-9 to put him up 20-18.

Round 3 – Garcia comes out firing and Phan defends most of the punches, but Garcia connects with leg kicks. Phan connects with a combo up close. Garcia drops Phan with a punch. Phan returns to his feet and Garcia pours it on looking for the finish, but Phan clinches Garcia to recover. Phan and Garcia trade shots in the center of the Octagon after separating. Phan scores a takedown, but Garcia ties him up to in guard to force a quick standup. Garcia follows punches with another leg kick, then Phan answers with a combo of his own. Most of Garcia’s punches missing while Phan connects with the jab. Garcia tries for a takedown, but Phan scrambles out and Garcia attacks Phan to the final bell. Round 1 – Sonnen rushes Stann and presses him against the fence in the clinch. Sonnen fires punches, Stann reverses, and they trade more punches. Sonnen gets back to the outside and knees the body. Sonnen trips Stann down and into side control. Stann gets Sonnen to guard as he tries to get mount, but Sonnen gets his back in a scramble. Sonnen rolls into mount and Stann gives up his back again as he tries to avoid damage. Sonnen slams Stann back down, but Stann gets him back into full guard. Sonnen ground and pounds from the top, postures up for bigger punches, and controls Stann to the bell. MMAFrenzy scores the first for Sonnen 10-9, but it’s close to 10-8.

Round 2 – Sonnen quickly takes Stann down again and goes back to work with ground and pound. Sonnen moves to side control and then to mount as Stann struggles to even avoid damage let alone mount any offense of his own. Sonnen lands short punches to the head, but Stann gets back to full guard. Stann looks to set up a triangle, but the referee stands them up. Stann lands a big punch on the restart, but Sonnen shoots, stays in the clinch, then slams Stann down again and is into side control. In his post-fight interview, Sonnen says “Anderson Silva, you suck” and calls for rematch on Super Bowl weekend with stipulation that Silva leaves division if Sonnen wins and Sonnen leaves UFC if Silva wins.

UFC Featherweight Championship

Round 1 – Florian opens the action with leg kicks before Aldo rushes forward with punches. They settle down in the middle of the Octagon and Aldo lunges with punches again. Florian uses a leg kick to go for a jab then shoots for a takedown, but Aldo stays on his feet and tags him in a flurry. Florian quickly looks for another takedown, but Aldo stays standing against the fence. Florian gets Aldo down twice, but Aldo gets back to his feet and fights free. Florian ducks a punch a tries for a single leg but Aldo slips free. Florian punches the body then goes to the clinch as he presses for another takedown. A few elbows by Florian, but he can’t get another takedown before the bell. MMAFrenzy scores the first for Florian 10-9.

Round 2 – Florian immediately closes in again and Aldo avoids, but Florian lands a punch. Aldo tries to find his rhythm as Florian avoids most of his punches. Aldo finally connects with a pair of punches, but Florian keeping his distance with kicks. The crowd starts to boo halfway through the second as they trade inside leg kicks. Florian cirles away and sets up more inside leg kicks, then goes high but it’s blocked. Aldo lands a high kick, tags Florian with a jab, then just misses with a kick in a scramble. Aldo goes inside again and also lands with his hands again. Florian looks for a takedown from the clinch in the final seconds but it isn’t there. Round 3 – Aldo connects more frequently to start the third. Florian tries to answer, but Aldo is landing with more power including another hard leg kick. Florian goes for a takedown, but Aldo reverses and nearly has mount but Florian keeps him in half guard. Florian content to keep Aldo under control and the champion does little from the top. Aldo stands and Florian throws upkicks. Aldo controls the feet and gets back to the ground, but Florian escapes back to his feet. Florian tries for another takedown from the clinch, but Aldo stays on his feet to finish the round strong. MMAFrenzy scores the third for Aldo 10-9 evening the fight at 29-29.

Round 4 – Aldo and Florian go back at it in the center of the Octagon and Aldo continues to get the better of the excahanges as he attacks the inside of Florian’s leg with kicks. Florian goes for a single, but they end in the clinch again as Aldo shrugs it off and escapes back to the center of the cage. After another exchange, Florian grabs the clinch and walks Aldo to the fence. Aldo reverses to the outside and they trade knees as they struggle for position. Florian goes for a single again, but Aldo slips free. Florian immediately goes for another takedown from the clinch, but Aldo stays standing and they separate. Aldo misses with a jumping knee and they trade punches before the bell sounds. MMAFrenzy scores the fourth 10-10 and has the fight 39-39 heading to the fifth and final round.

Round 5 -Florian and Aldo touch gloves to start the final round. Florian quickly goes to the clinch again as he looks for a takedown, but settles for a few knees before separating. Florian slips on a knee attempt, but attacks with upkicks and kicks to the knee from his back. Aldo controls Florian’s feet, drops into his guard, and lands an elbow. Aldo gets mount and Florian is forced to give up his back. Aldo can’t do anything with it as Florian gets back to half guard before scrambling to his feet. They trade knees in the clinch as Aldo presses Florian against the fence. They stall and are restarted with 80 seconds to go. Aldo clinches again and controls Florian against the fence, but Florian reverses to the outside. Florian fires some knees and backs away for a combo. Round 1 – Maynard comes out in a low stance as he meets Edgar in the center of the Octagon. Edgar lunges with jabs, but they don’t connect. Maynard kicks and Edgar nearly grabs it. Edgar lands with a punch close then circles away. Edgar rushes for a takedown, but he can’t get him down and they return to their feet. Maynard misses with a high kick, but rocks Edgar with an uppercut. Maynard lands another uppercut followed by a big knee. Edgar is wobbled, but avoids a follow-up. Edgard hasn’t recovered yet and Maynard hunts for a finish with several combos that hurt Edgar again, but the champion survives another barrage that looks to break his now. scores the first for Maynard 10-8.

Round 2 – Edgar looks mostly recovered from the first as he comes out on the attack to start the second. Maynard patiently looking for an opening, but Edgar connects with a good left. Edgar avoids a lunging punch from Maynard and counters with another of his own. Both fighters connect with solid punches as they look for openings. Edgar stays more active as he circles, but Maynard shrugs off another takedown. Edgar lands another good combination and avoids Maynard’s attack in the final seconds. MMAFrenzy scores the second for Edgar 10-9 to make the fight 19-18 Maynard.

Round 3 – Edgar and Maynard avoid most of the punches and kicks to start the second. Edgar ducking Maynard’s jab and avoids an uppercut like the one that put him down in the first. Edgar works the jab and fires leg kicks. Edgar controls the pace as Maynard has settled in too much and struggles to find his target. Edgar with several more good combinations as he avoids Maynard’s power punches. Edgar dives in again with another combo and avoids the counter leg kick before the bell. Round 4 – Edgar lands another combo to start the fourth. Maynard’s warned for poking Edgar’s eye but they fight on. Edgar tags Maynard with another combo then shrugs off a takedown. Edgar rushes in with combos that land, but Maynard counters with a pair of hard rights. Edgar mixes in more leg kicks and continues to connect with punches in close. Edgar goes for a takedown and Maynard sprawls, but Edgar hurts him with a combo, drops him with a right, and finishes him with punches on the ground.
